In this example we’ll use Apple’s Compressor – which is essentially the Final Cut version of Adobe Media Encoder. Regardless of the encoding software, the majority of these terms and settings still apply. These are the best export settings for YouTube, Vimeo, and most other online video streaming websites.
After selecting MP4 as the export type, you’re going to want to set your export to the follow settings:
Settings under the General tab:
The settings under the General tab are simple. You’re going to want to make sure that:
- Format is set to Video and Audio
- Retiming is set to 100% duration
Settings under the Video tab:
- Frame Size – If you know it, select it. If not, set it to Automatic.
- Pixel Aspect Ratio – Square
- Frame Rate – If you know it, select it. If not, set it to Automatic.
- Field Order – Same as source, Progressive
- H.264 Profile – High
- Entropy Mode – CABAC
- Key Frame Interval – Automatic
- Data Rate – 20,000 kbps
- Multi-pass – Unchecked
- Allow Frame Reordering – Checked
- Cropping – 0, 0, 0, 0
- Padding – Preserve Source Aspect Ration
- Resize Filter – Best
- Retiming Quality – Better
- Adaptive Details – Checked
- Anti-aliasing Level – 0
- Details Level – 0
Settings within the Audio tab:
- Channel Layout – Stereo (L R)
- Sample Rate – 48 kHz
- Data Rate – 320 kbps
That’s it — hit the Start Batch button! Again, as these are common encoding parameters, these settings can be applied in most other NLE software as well, including Media Encoder. These are the best export settings for YouTube, Vimeo, and other online video streaming websites.

Ultimately, I usually will set my Target Bitrate to 8 Mbps and the Maximum Bitrate to 16Mbps when I m exporting or HD video using the 2 Pass Bitrate Encoding.
I think I am doing it right, and I am logged into and linked up with youtube but every time I try to export at the end it says something like cannot find channel.
